Winners of the tourist photography competition, Travel in Taiwan: Most Beautiful Moment, organized by the Tourism Bureau were announced April 9 at the agency’s service center.

A total of 111 pictures won awards, with total prize money of NT$2.2 million (US$73,200) handed out, and blowups of the top three pictures on view at the ceremony.

“Photographs are an important tool for promoting Taiwan as a tourist destination,” a bureau official said.

The competition called for entries in six categories: entertainment, nature, romance, fine food, shopping and culture, with 26, 24, 19, 16, 13 and 13 prizewinners, respectively.

The entertainment category had the most entries, a reflection of the huge variety of possibilities Taiwan has to offer, the official said, with such activities as hiking, train trips, cycling and hang gliding well-represented.

The nature category showcased the nation’s geography, especially its forests, demonstrating an abundance of natural resources disproportionate to its size. Romance also featured Taiwan’s scenery, but most often as a picturesque backdrop to wedding photos.

The food category displayed a host of appealing fruits and snacks, while culture included traditional folk beliefs and the lively ceremonies and fine handicrafts of the nation’s indigenous peoples.

The shopping category reflected the full range of unique agricultural products and souvenirs that Taiwan has to offer, as well as the traditional markets and modern malls where they can be purchased. (SDH)
